OK, the days are starting to get longer, but it still isn't spring as it is still raining and gloomy most days. So, I think it is the perfect time to read a book. Any suggestions on good books to read? What have you read lately that really brightened your life?
Or, how about writing a book? I have decided that I am going to write a short book on self-sabotage, fear and goals. Sounds like a hefty project, but I don't intend it to be. I want to write a small book - no more than 100 pages that I can self-publish and sell at a Mind, Body, Spirit fair in Portland in April. Have any of you self-published before? Any suggestions?

Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Relin. The most inspiring book. Greg Builds Schools for girls in Pakistan. www.threecupsoftea.com
ReplyDeleteThanks Gabby, It sounds great - I hadn't heard of it before. Judith
i am so wildly unambitious that it makes me laugh... but I wanted once to write a history of menstruation and someone beat me to it. and then a book about kids called "you're not the boss of me" and now I could write a book about physical organization or designing work spaces but I won't. and by the way Judith--- when do we meet at Noah's bagels for coffee again?

Great thoughts - perhaps attending my upcoming goal setting class would be a good way to get the books you want to write off "Someday Island" and into print. It is coming up soon.
As for Noah's let's set a date and meet up - I miss you, Judith
I also highly recommend Three Cups of Tea - just finished it and it was very hard to put down.
ReplyDeleteI am currently reading "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert, and loving it. I find it relevant, thought-provoking, and laugh-out-loud funny.
OK - that is two for Three Cups of Tea - and I have, of course, heard a lot about Eat, Pray Love. It is on my list of must reads = as is Three Cups of Tea, now. Thanks for sharing, Judith
The Color of Water by James Mcbride is a great book. I recommend it! It's "a black man's tribute to his white mother". The mom is also Jewish. Very good reading.
ReplyDeleteWow, this sounds good, too! So many great books. Thank you, Judith
Hi, Per your request for good books, I have 3 I'd like to share.
ReplyDeleteBTW, this is a great-looking blog. I'm excited to join in.
So, the books, Cheryl Richardson's 'The Unmistakable Touch of Grace'. I love the shift in her work over the years with a focus of incorporating more silence into our lives and stepping into awareness of how we are living/being in the present moments. Same course I am now finding myself following more consciously, deliberately. Neat stuff!
Jon Kabat-Zinn 'Wherever You Go There You Are'. Same theme. A little less compelling reading than Cheryl's book but I find his 'try-it' exercises very good. Same theme of stillness, awareness.
Third I am now reading 'Eat, Pray, Love' by Elizabeth Gilbert, featured on Oprah fairly recently. Highly readable, captivating, again with the same themes.
For all of you Oprah fans, sign up for her Soul Series where she'll feature different perspectives about the 'greater reality of our lives'.
She has a sign-up on her site for discussions on the new Eckert Tolle book that sound very interesting.
Not sure if that book is part of the Soul Series or something separate.
Enjoy.
